Understanding how users move through a feature is one of the most powerful ways to validate your product decisions. The INSPECT tab in Agiloop provides a user journey analysis view that shows you exactly how real users navigate your app and features — step by step, session by session.
What Is User Journey Analysis?
User journey analysis shows you the sequence of actions users take when interacting with a feature. Rather than just counting clicks or sessions, the journey view reveals the paths users follow: where they start, where they go next, and where they drop off.
This is useful for answering questions like:
- Are users reaching the core functionality you built?
- Where do users get stuck or abandon a flow?
- Do new users behave differently from returning users?
- Which paths are most common, and which are outliers?
Opening the User Journey View
- Navigate to the feature you want to analyze.
- Select the INSPECT tab.
- Locate the User Journeys section within the INSPECT view.
The journey view loads alongside the rest of your analytics data, using the same date range you have set for the session.
Note: Use the date range controls at the top of the INSPECT tab to focus on a specific time window. Enable Live Mode to see journeys as they happen in real time.
The Aggregate Journey Flow Visualization
The aggregate journey flow is a visual map of all recorded user paths, combined across every session in your selected date range. Each step in the flow represents a distinct action or screen state, and the connections between steps show how users moved from one to the next.
The width or weight of each path reflects how frequently users followed it — thicker paths mean more users took that route. This makes it easy to spot the dominant flow at a glance, as well as less common branches.
Use the aggregate view to:
- Identify the most common entry points into the feature
- See where paths diverge and which branches users prefer
- Spot drop-off points where many users stop progressing
Drilling Into Individual User Sessions
While the aggregate view shows overall patterns, sometimes you need to understand what one specific user experienced. The INSPECT tab lets you drill down into individual sessions directly from the journey visualization.
Selecting a session opens a detailed view of that user's exact journey — every step they took, in order, with timing information. This is especially useful when investigating an unusual path or following up on a user report.
The User List with Session Details
Alongside the journey visualization, the INSPECT tab displays a list of users who have sessions within your selected date range. Each entry in the list shows:
- The user identifier (name or anonymous ID)
- The number of sessions recorded
- Session timestamps
- Journey path summary
Selecting a user from the list filters the journey view to show only that user's activity, making it straightforward to correlate behavior with specific individuals or accounts.
Filtering by User Cohorts: New vs. Returning
To compare how different audiences experience your feature, you can filter journey data by user cohort:
- New users: Users who are in their first session with the feature
- Returning users: Users who have visited the feature in a previous session
To apply a cohort filter, use the filter controls in the user journey section and select your desired cohort.
This comparison is valuable when validating onboarding flows, since new users may take longer or follow different paths than experienced users. If returning users are still struggling with the same steps as new users, that signals a usability issue rather than just a learning curve.
Tip: Compare new and returning user journeys side by side to identify which friction points resolve with experience and which ones persist — persistent friction is usually worth addressing first.
Fullscreen Journey View
For a clearer look at complex journey flows, you can expand the journey visualization to fullscreen. This removes surrounding UI chrome and gives you a larger canvas to read multi-step flows, particularly useful when presenting to stakeholders or working through a detailed review.
To enter fullscreen, locate the fullscreen toggle within the journey visualization panel. Press Escape or use the same toggle to return to the standard view.
Putting It All Together
User journey analysis works best when combined with the other data in the INSPECT tab. Use the metrics dashboard — covering users, sessions, and errors — to establish the overall health of a feature, then move into the journey view to understand the behavioral story behind those numbers. From there, you can carry your findings into the ITERATE tab to create or prioritize features that address what you observed.
